Protect your family’s health by eliminating lead-based paint hazards in your home!
Lead-based paint in homes poses serious health risks, particularly for children. The New Jersey Lead Remediation
and Abatement program (LRAP), funded by a $180 million federal grant, aims to address this issue by supporting
the removal of lead-based paint from homes built before 1978 that are occupied by low- to moderate-income
households.
As a grantee under the LRAP program administered by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, the
United Way of Greater Union County helps eligible households in Union County safeguard their families’ health by
identifying and addressing lead hazards in the home.
What are the dangers of lead in my home?
Before it was banned by the federal government in 1978, lead-
based paint was used extensively in homes.
Lead is toxic, especially to children, and can potentially cause
permanent health issues. The most common way young
children are exposed to lead is by putting lead-based paint
chips in their mouth or by inhaling invisible dust in and around
their home or apartment.
In adults, lead exposure can cause high blood pressure,
cognitive issues, digestive issues, kidney, and reproductive
health issues.
Pregnant women exposed to lead risk harm to their unborn
baby. Lead exposure can affect the unborn child's brain,
causing developmental problems later in life.
